Studying Business & Management: What can I do with my degree?

If you’re looking into studying for a degree then you’ll probably want to have some idea of what’s involved and what you can get out of it. Distance learning courses like those offered by Kaplan Open Learning give you the opportunity to study from home, working around your family or current job, but you’ll want to make sure that you can further your career at the end of it.

A Business and Management degree is a very popular choice these days and there’s plenty of opportunity to further your career by studying for one. Business and management degrees are excellent for building the foundations of business management and developing skills that can be transferred to roles in different business markets.
A Business and Management degree will increase your awareness of business analysis, sensitivity, international marketing, project management and creativity, developing your core understanding of business models and applying them to work situations.

Your degree will equip you with a strong knowledge of business ideas that will make you highly employable across all business sectors including accounting, human resources and law. As well as understanding an array of business models and marketing strategies, you will also be able to look at applying your skills to a range of domestic as well as international companies.

The skills that you develop during your course will be sought after by employers from a range of industries and will include critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, project management, decision making, data management, effective time management and great communication skills.

You can also use your degree as a launching pad and as a new graduate you will be a prime candidate for a graduate training scheme or entry level job.
Many companies will take you on and allow you to train in a graduate scheme which can lead to further qualifications. If for example you were interested in accounting you could work towards endorsement from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or if you are interested in the legal side of business it may be possible to take a law conversion course. Another popular route is to undertake a Masters course or further training to specialise in one particular area e.g. marketing or human resources.
